Biografi Singkat Prof. Dr. Ir. Bungaran Saragih

Prof. Bungaran Saragih, Ph.D. is a renowned economist and academician with a vast experience in the field of agriculture, resource economics, and rural sociology. He is a highly respected figure in the world of agriculture and has received several awards and accolades for his contribution to the advancement of agricultural sciences and agricultural development in Indonesia.

Prof. Bungaran Saragih completed his Bachelor (Ir) degree in Agricultural Economics from the Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University, in 1971. He then went on to pursue higher education in the United States and received his M.Ec. degree in Economics with a minor in Statistics from the Department of Economics and Business, North Carolina State University, in 1977. Prof. Saragih’s academic pursuits continued, and he earned his Ph.D. degree in Economics with a minor in Rural Sociology from the same university in 1980. His dissertation was titled “Economic Organization, Size, and Relative Efficiency: The Case of Oil Palm Plantations in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia.”

Throughout his career, Prof. Bungaran Saragih has held several professional positions, including Director of the Center for Development Studies at Bogor Agricultural University (1993-2000), Minister of Agriculture (2001-2004), and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry (2000-2001). He has also held numerous positions with professional bodies and committees, including President Commissioner of PT Palma Serasih Tbk (2021-present), Chairman of the Board of Trustees Palm Oil Agribusiness Strategic Policy Institute (PASPI) (2013-present), and Chairman of the Board of Advisors for the National Executive Board of the Indonesian Union of Churches (2005-2010).

In recognition of his distinguished contributions to the field of agriculture and resource economics, Prof. Saragih has received several awards, including the Matsuda Award from the International Society for Southeast Asian Agricultural Sciences (ISSAAS) in 2005, the Presidential Award for Development Contribution by the President of the Republic of Indonesia in 2001, and the title of Honorable Professor from both George-August University in Germany and Tokyo Nodai University in Japan.
