Indonesia is the largest country deforesting and converting its peat land into agricultural areas.

From 1990 to 2008 3.83 million ha of global peat land was converted into agricultural land or for other uses (Joosten, 2009). Of that, (Figure) about 37 percent happened in Russian and 33 percent in European peatland areas. About 13 percent of Indonesia’s peatland was also converted in that period. Therefore, the largest peat land deforestation from 1990 to 2008 was not in Indonesia, but in Russia and Europe.

Selama periode tahun 1990-2008 gambut dunia mengalami konversi menjadi lahan budidaya pertanian dan penggunaan lain sebesar 3,83 juta hektar (Joosten, 2009). Dari luasan tersebut (Gambar) sekitar 37 persen terjadi di Rusia dan 33 persen terjadi di kawasan gambut Eropa. Konversi gambut juga terjadi di Indonesia yakni sebesar 13 persen pada periode yang sama. Dengan demikian deforestasi gambut terluas pada periode 1990-2008 bukan di Indonesia melainkan di Rusia dan Eropa.
