Implementation of a policy concerning the mandatory use of biodiesel from 2014 to 2016 in Indonesia led to accumulated savings of diesel fuel, reduced CO2 emissions and more foreign exchange from diesel imports (Figure). Cumulatively, 5 million tons of diesel fuel imports and foreign exchange from diesel imports worth US$2.3 billion were saved. It also reduced CO2 emissions by 12.4 million tons.

Thus, the policy for mandatory biodiesel provides double benefits for Indonesia, namely to build national energy sovereignty through the efficient use of imported diesel and to earn foreign exchange from imported diesel. In addition, the policy reduces national CO2 emissions.

Berdasarkan realisasi kebijakan mandatori biodiesel tahun 2014-2016 di Indonesia menghasilkan akumulasi penghematan solar, emisi CO2 dan devisa impor solar (Gambar). Secara akumulasi, impor solar yang berhasil dihemat adalah 5 juta ton dengan penghematan devisa untuk impor solar sebesar USD 2,3 miliar. Selain itu juga menghemat emisi CO2 sebesar 12,4 juta ton CO2.

Dengan demikian kebijakan mandatori biodiesel memberi manfaat ganda bagi Indonesia yakni membangun kedaulatan energi nasional melalui penghematan solar impor dan devisa impor solar. Selain itu kebijakan tersebut mengurangi emisi CO2 nasional.
