In quite a revolutionary development, palm oil has become the most widely produced and consumed vegetable oil in the world by the global community. Recent USDA publications show that palm oil and palm kernel oil dominate world vegetable oil production with a share of 38 percent in the 2020–2021 period. Meanwhile, during the year, palm oil consumption accounted for 40 percent of total global vegetable oil consumption. This show the position of palm oil above soybean oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower seed oil and other vegetable oils.

Such a position for palm oil has implications for creating competition between vegetable oils. Price competition is impossible, given the high productivity of palm oil, which causes its price to be relatively competitive compared to other vegetable oils. Therefore, the anti-palm oil party, which has been driven by vegetable oil producing countries and competitors for palm oil, has carried out various non-price competition actions in the form of spreading negative issues and black campaigns aimed at damaging the image of the palm oil industry and phasing out palm oil in the global market.

In the last two decades, negative issues and black campaigns for palm oil have become increasingly massive and intensively developed in various countries in the world, including Indonesia, as the largest palm oil producing country in the world. The anti-palm oil disseminates negative issues and black campaigns by utilizing various social media platforms and mainstream media (TV, radio, and newspapers) and targeting the younger generation (millennials and Gen-Z) in Indonesia.

Actually, the spread of negative issues or black campaigns and the movement of Palm Oil Free are part of the political and economic agenda of importing countries related to protectionism. However, due to the imbalance of information obtained by the Indonesian youth regarding palm oil, which can lead to a negative preference for palm oil. This negative perception is also feared to be detrimental to the national palm oil industry. If this continues, it will threaten the existence of the national palm oil industry and ultimately cause a negative domino effect on the economy, considering that the palm oil industry is one of the strategic sectors of the Indonesian economy.

AKSI 2021 palm oil

Therefore, PASPI, which is supported by stakeholders from the national palm oil industry, organizes advocacy and promotion of palm oil targeting Indonesian youth through the “AKSI 2021” program (Indonesian Palm Oil Creative Academy and Award).

In the welcoming speech delivered by Dr. Tungkot Sipayung at the opening of the AKSI 2021, he stated that the vision of the AKSI is to disseminate information about palm oil in the form of creative and innovative content creations through various digital platforms, where the content is the output of the creative work of the Indonesian youth. In addition to being a communication tool for delivering information and values about palm oil throughout the world, this palm oil creative content is also expected to be a communication tool in the context of improving the national palm oil industry.

The Executive Director of PASPI also expressed his hope that the combination of creativity in the palm oil sector produced by stakeholders (farmers, companies, government, researchers) and creativity in the field of creative content produced by the Indonesian youth as creators, is expected to bring the national palm oil industry towards a brighter new era.

Different from the palm oil advocacy programs that have often been held before, the “AKSI 2021” program not only provides a platform for creative content competitions to raise the issue of palm oil but also provides various programs to increase the knowledge and competence of Indonesian youth as a form of commitment to the care and attention of national oil palm stakeholders. This form of attention is expressed in the Palm Oil Academy activities as one of the “AKSI 2021” series.

In the Palm Oil Academy, Indonesian youth can gain information and knowledge on palm oil substances and develop creative skills that can be applied in the creation of digital content that will be contested in the “AKSI 2021” program.

Sawit101 is one of the Palm Oil Academy series that specifically addresses issues of palm oil in the aspects of health, environmental and socio-economics. The discussion on the palm oil issue was delivered by practitioners and academics who are already very competent in their fields, such as Dr. Mira Dewi, S.Ked, Msi (Lecturer of the Department of Community Nutrition at IPB University and SEAFAST Researcher), Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanto Santosa, DEA (Professor of the Faculty of Forestry at IPB), and Dr. Tungkot Sipayung (PASPI).

The panelists revealed valid data-based palm oil facts from credible sources as well as succeeded in breaking various issues and black campaigns that had been disseminated by anti-palm oil parties to damage the image of palm oil.

The next series from Palm Oil Academy is Creative Class, where in this session the participants will develop technical skills in creating digital creative content, both in graphic design and motion graphics. This Creative Class webinar is filled with graphic designers such as Rafael Jonathan S.Sn, M.Ds and Adhellia Purnamasari.

After participating in the Palm Oil Academy series of Sawit101 and Creative Class sessions, “AKSI 2021” program participants can apply the information and knowledge gained to creative content works that will then be included in the Palm Oil Creator Competition. The winner of the creative content competition will be announced at the Palm Oil Creator Award, which will be held virtually on December 11, 2021.
