Not many people know that palm oil is one of the natural ingredients used as raw material for skincare products and has been widely used by worldwide-famous skincare brands. Palm oil is a vegetable oil that is widely used in cosmetic products (skincare and make up) because it is moisturizing and gives the desired texture. Palm oil and its derivatives are used as conditioning agents – occlusive and can also be used as viscocity increasing agents – nonaqueos.
The use of palm oil and its derivatives as cosmetic raw materials including skincare, has an advantage compared to mineral oil and synthesis component, because palm oil-based cosmetic products are produced free of aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbon compounds that are harmful to human skin. The safety of the use of palm oil is also further strengthened by the assessment of the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. The assessment by the CIR Expert Panel is based on an evaluation of scientific data which concludes that palm oil and its derivatives are safe for use in cosmetics (skincare and make up) and personal care products.
The use of palm oil in skincare products has three functions as emulsifiers, thickener, and surfactants. First, emulsifier means that palm oil has the function of mixing water and oil. Hydrating agent and moisturizing agent on the moisturizer will not blend without an emulsifier. Cetearyl alcohol, Cetyl alcohol, and Glyceryl sterate are examples of emulsifiers from processed palm oil.
Second, Palm oil functions as a thickener to improve the consistency of overly liquid formulas such as Glycerin and Stearic acid. And third, the last function of palm oil in skincare products is a surfactant by lowering the surface tension of the water so that it can act as a cleansing agent that can remove impurities so that it is easier to clean. Examples of surfactants made from palm oil are Sodium laurit sulfat (SLS) and we often meet in various personal care such as soap.
Another advantage is that palm oil is rich in beta carotene (pro-vitamin A) and vitamin E, both of which have high antioxidant properties that have health and beauty benefits. Beta carotene has benefits including: brighten the skin, remove acne scars, make skin fresh, moisturize the skin, overcome dull skin, stimulate collagen growth which can increase skin regeneration and improve skin cells to make tighten skin, and much more. Dermatologist, dr. Inneke Jane Hidayat, Sp.KK also mentioned that carotenoids have anti-aging functions.
Meanwhile, vitamin E is also beneficial for skin health which plays a role in moisturizing the skin, treating sunburned skin, disguising wrinkles, preventing premature aging, and others. These various advantages and benefits show that palm oil-based skincare products are able to offer skin solution of healthy, beautiful and natural.
