Palm Oil Contains Vitamin E, That Can Improve Body Immunity
The Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia is unlikely to end. Indonesia’s increasing Covid-19 case curve is also steep with an increase in the number of cases of more than 300 cases every day and the highest case fatality rate (CFR) in Asia. However, the handling of Covid-19 shows a glimmer of hope because based on data updates (4/21) shows the number of Covid-19 patients who have recovered is higher than that of patients who died.
To make the curve for Covid-19 cases in Indonesia flatter, there are many ways that can be done by the community. In addition to washing hands frequently with soap, people are also encouraged to follow other WHO recommendations such as consuming healthy and nutritious foods that contain vitamins and minerals.
Vitamins are essential substances that can help the body’s metabolic processes so that can prevent the transmission of the Covid-19 virus. One of the vitamins that is meant is Vitamin E. Alpha tocopherol or vitamin E commonly known as skin vitamins because of its high antioxidant content.
Against Covid-19, the antioxidant in vitamin E acts as an antidote to free radicals that can weaken the immune system. Study of Siswanto et al., in the Jurnal Gizi Indonesia states that the role of vitamin E in protecting cell membranes and maintaining membrane permeability so it can maintain cell membrane integrity. Cell membranes whose quality is guaranteed can improve communication between cells to produce cytokinins. Cytokines will produce a strong immune system so it is more immune to viruses including the Coronavirus. In addition, antioxidants in vitamin E can also play a role in protecting blood vessels from damage caused by viruses. Coronavirus attacks blood cells and then damage the blood vessels in it.
The explanation above shows that vitamin E is needed by the body to avoid being infected by the Coronavirus. However, some recent research says that consumption of vitamin E supplements in high doses of tablets can cause health problems. In order to still be able to get benefit from vitamin E, it is recommended to consume foods that contain vitamin E rather than consumption of supplements.
One of the food source that is rich in vitamin E is palm oil. Vitamin E in palm oil is also more than other vegetable oils. The content of vitamin E in palm oil reaches 1,172 ppm, or higher than other vegetable oils such as soybean oil, sunflower seed oil and corn oil.
The research of Man and Haryati (1997), also showed that vitamin E in palm oil contained 20 percent tocopherols and 80 percent tocotrienols. Various studies show that alpha-tocotrienols is 40-60 times more effective and potent against free radicals compared to alpha-tocopherols. This means that the abundant content of tocotrienols in palm oil makes palm oil as a food source with a rich antioxidant content. This makes palm oil as a food source needed by the body to prevented from being infected by the Coronavirus.
