Potential “Money” from Palm Oil Products
Oil palm tree has a nicknamed as “The Incredible Tree”, because all parts of the tree can be utilized. Currently, mayble people only know that the product produced by oil palm plants is only the oil, even though all parts of the biomass of oil palm trees can be processed into products with high economic value.
One of the oil palm biomass that has great potential and economic benefits is palm fronds. Based on research by Hassan and Ishida (1992), the potential for oil palm frond waste reaches 40-50 fronds/tree/year. The large number of palm fronds produced is a shame if it is not utilized optimally. Apart from being used as a source of animal feed in the integrated system of oil palm plantation and livestocks, another potential for using palm fronds that can produce high economic value is palm oil sticks.
The palm oil stick product market also continues to grow. Not only in the domestic market, the high demand for palm oil sticks also in the global market. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, through the Tanjung Balai Asahan Agricultural Quarantine, North Sumatra, the export volume of palm oil sticks is 8.5 thousand tons, or the export volume has increased by 34.9% compared to the same period in 2019 which was only 6.3 thousand tons.
Generally, sticks from palm fronds can only be used for making broom sticks. However, with the development of innovation and market preferences, the palm oil stick innovation can also be developed into several types of handicraft products such as woven plates.
Currently, if we look at there are already a lot of restaurants, especially those with the lesehan concept (sitting on the floor and eat it in small/low table), that use woven plates made of sticks as dining mats or plate for their customers. Not only the domestic market, the export market potential also has quite a bright opportunity. The high preference and interest of global market consumers towards eco-friendly products, authentic, traditional and handicraft products that are considered to have high value reflects the very large market opportunities for oiol palm woven stick plates.
The production of woven plates from oil palm sticks is done by the wives of oil palm farmers using the technology that is used quite simply and is still manual. To make one plate from oil palm sticks, it takes about 120 sticks or 1 kg of palm sticks can produce 5 plates. The price for one plate of woven palm sticks reaches Rp 8,000/piece.
Trimo, one of the craftsmen for woven plates from oil palm sticks from Pelalawan, Riau, has succeeded in creating a technology called PRAUDI which can process oil palm fronds into sticks with a capacity of 4-5 kg/hour. With this technology, the production time of woven plates from oil palm sticks is shortened so that they can produce more plates in less time.
In a webinar was held by the Indonesiaon Oil Palm Research Institute (IOPRI), Febri Yunarta, who is also the Founder and Owner of Creabrush Indonesia, shared a succes story of his business which is utilized oil palm sticks. Apart from making woven plates from palm sticks, Febri has also made several other innovative products based on palm sticks, in the form sandals and bags. Febri stated that the advantage of the palm stick is that it has better durability and strength and does not break easily so that it can be combined with other materials such as leather for making bags, besides that, this nature-based use is also environmentally friendly.
For making bags, he can sell them for Rp 380,000 each bag. He also sure that the business prospect of bag or sandal from oil palm stick is good. Moreover, the opportunity to export can be made considering that there is a huge interest in foreign consumers for something unique, natural-based that does not exist in that country.
These various product innovations are also a “fresh air” for the palm oil industry, which must start moving to utilize and commercialize palm biomass/waste products such as oil palm fronds.
