Red Palm Oil: “The Most Precious Treasure” of Palm Oil Can Help the Body to Fight Against Coronavirus
Palm oil-based food products that are widely known and used daily by Indonesian people are cooking oil. Palm cooking oil is derived from CPO (Crude Palm Oil) that have gone through refining, bleaching and deodorized processes, so that the CPO which was originally dark orange (reddish yellow), turns clear into golden yellow. Palm cooking oil producers carry out such a process to meet the preferences of consumers in Indonesia who want a clear color on palm cooking oil.
In fact, by removing the reddish orange color in palm oil means that we have also removed “the most precious treasure” contained in palm oil. Orange pigment in palm oil is a component that makes palm oil nominated as “the world’s richest natural plant” which is rich in beta carotene and a source of provitamin A. Beta carotene content in CPO reached 500-1000 ppm, or greater than carrots, tomatoes or banana.
In addition to being a precursor of vitamin A in the body, beta carotene also has an antioxidant function that is able to ward off free radicals. With this ability, beta carotene is able to prevent diseases caused by free radicals such as cancer, prevent premature aging, and also able to improve the body’s immune system.
The benefits of the beta carotene component in the orange color pigment that contained in palm oil (CPO) is very unfortunate if the component must be removed. Therefore, in recent years food technology researchers have continued to conduct research to obtain palm oil that has been removed by its impurity components (such as free fatty acids, gums and heavy metals) and without damaging the beneficial beta carotene content. The results of the study are called Red Palm Oil.
Red Palm Oil innovations produced by these researchers can be directly consumed as supplements in the form of capsules or liquids. The beta carotene content in Red Palm Oil is still quite high up to 650 ppm. The large potential of beta carotene makes Red Palm Oil a source of vitamin A that is more effective and cheaper than other sources of vitamin A. So that it can be used as a solution for public health problems in developing countries, namely Vitamin A Deficiency
As we all know, the Indonesian Ministry of Health annually in February and August organizes Vitamin A Month to meet the needs of vitamin A in children and pregnant women. Provision of vitamin A in children is also done to prevent stunting that can affect the child’s growth and cognitive development. There have also been many research that prove that consumption of Red Palm Oil has been shown to be effective in improving vitamin A status in children and mothers.
Not only is it rich in beta carotene, Red Palm Oil also has a large vitamin E content. One study written by Nagendran et al., And published in the Food and Nutrition Bulletin in 2000 showed that the vitamin E content in Red Palm Oil was 800 ppm which consists of 70 percent of tocotrienols, where the components of tocotrienols have an important role to inhibit cancer growth.
Recently, Prof. Sri Rahardjo, Professor of the Department of Food Technology and Agricultural Products, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), conducted research on Virgin Red Palm Oil. Besides containing vitamins A and E, the oil also contains 42 percent palmitic acid (saturated fatty acids) which functions to maintain and protect the health of the lungs. Palmitic acid is the main component about 60% phospholipid compound that lines the inner walls of the alveoi of the lungs. This phospholipid acts as a surfactant that can help facilitate the exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) from the alveoli cavity to blood vessels or vice versa.
Associated with the outbreak of Covid-19 which has become a pandemic, the consumption of Red Palm Oil is needed by the body. The content of vitamin A (beta carotene) and vitamin E as a source of antioxidants can increase body immunity and body endurance and produce strong antibodies to fight viruses including Corona.
Palmitic acid intake in Red Palm Oil also has the ability to maintain the availability of palmitic acid (and phospholipids) so that the gas exchange process is smooth again. This is especially needed for Covid-19 patients who suffer from breathing difficulties due to the Coronavirus that attacks the lungs and cells in the alveoli. Once again, palm oil with various benefits contained Red Palm Oil can be present like a hero in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.
