ABSTRAK

Dalam 20 tahun terakhir, industri minyak sawit dunia memperoleh sorotan dari masyarakat global salah satunya mengenai pengkaitan pertumbuhan produksi minyak sawit dunia dengan deforestasi, dimana isu ini juga menjadi tema kampanye NGO anti sawit global yang semakin intensif. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa komitmen kuat masyarakat global untuk memilih sumber produksi minyak nabati yang hemat deforestasi bahkan zero deforestation.

Kelapa sawit terbukti menjadi tanaman minyak nabati paling efisien dalam penggunaan lahan atau dapat dikatakan juga sebagai tanaman minyak nabati yang hemat deforestasi. Hal ini dikarenakan produktivitasnya yang relatif tinggi dibandingkan produktivitas tanaman kedelai, rapeseed dan bunga matahari dalam menghasilkan satu ton minyak nabati. Fakta tersebut juga dapat dibuktikan dari hasil simulasi yang menunjukkan kehadiran minyak sawit telah menghemat deforestasi dunia seluas 167 juta hektar dalam rangka menyediakan minyak nabati pada tahun 2020. Selain itu, untuk memenuhi kebutuhan minyak nabati menuju 2050 dengan tanpa menyebabkan deforestasi, peningkatan produktivitas minyak sawit menjadi 6.5 ton per hektar merupakan solusi terbaik.

Fakta tersebut membuat semakin jelas bahwa kampanye maupun kebijakan phase-out minyak sawit dengan menggunakan argumen untuk mengurangi deforestasi, justru akan semakin memicu perluasan deforestasi dunia yang lebih luas. Sebaliknya, dengan mempromosikan penggunaan minyak sawit sebagai minyak nabati dunia akan berdampak pada penghematan deforestasi dunia.
