Along with the high consumption of animal protein in the European Union, this has implications for the increasing demand for animal feed. To meet the needs of the European feed industry, raw materials are supplied from domestic and imported sources, which means their dependence on imports is increasing.

The main feedstuffs imported into the European Union are oil cake and meal, with a share of 54 percent. Soybean meals imported from South America (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay) are products of the oil meal which are widely used by the EU animal feed industry. However, its use raised the risk of a trade-off between food-feed which has implications for increasing soybean prices and other issues related to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and embodied-deforestation.

Oil palm plantations are once again here to provide a solution. In addition to producing palm oil for the EU for both food (feeding) and biodiesel (biofuelling), oil palm plantations through the by-product, namely Palm Kernel Meal (PKM), can be used as feedstuff for EU animal feed industry. Apart from being nutritious and competitive in price, PKM products also have other advantages for the EU consumers, namely that they are not exposed to GMOs and are free from the issue of embodied-deforestation due to by-products.

Seiring dengan tingginya konsumsi protein hewani masyarakat Uni Eropa berimplikasi pada besarnya kebutuhan pakan ternak yang juga mengalami peningkatan. Untuk memenuhi kebutuhan bahan baku industri pakan Eropa di pasok dari domestik maupun impor, dimana ketergantungan terhada impornya makin meningkat.

Bahan baku pakan ternak (feedstuff) yang banyak diimpor oleh Uni Eropa adalah oils cake and meal dengan pangsa sebesar 54 persen. Soybean meals yang diimpor dari Amerika Selatan (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay) adalah produk dari kelompok oil meal yang banyak digunakan oleh industri pakan ternak UE. Namun, penggunaannya menciptakan risiko terjadinya trade-off antara food-feed yang berimplikasi juga pada peningkatan harga kedelai serta menimbulkan isu lainnya terkait Genetic Modified Organism (GMO) dan embodieddeforestation.

Perkebunan sawit sekali lagi hadir memberikan solusi. Selain menghasilkan minyak sawit untuk EU baik untuk kebutuhan pangan (feeding) maupun biodiesel (biofuel), perkebunan sawit melalui by-product yaitu Palm Kernel Meal (PKM) dapat digunakan sebagai bahan baku industri pakan ternak EU. Selain bernutrisi dan kompetitif dari segi harga, produk PKM juga memiliki keunggulan lain di mata konsumen UE yaitu tidak terpapar GMO dan bebas dari isu embodied-deforestation karena by-product atau produk sampingan.
