Introduction : An Issue And Policy Analysis Of The Palm Oil Industry In Indonesia Vol. 2

Palm oil is more dominating the global vegetable oil market. Based on USDA data (2021), the share of palm oil reaches 44 percent of the total vegetable oil production in 2020. Not only dominating production, but palm oil also dominates the structure of global vegetable oil consumption as indicated by its share reaching 41 percent in the same period.

This position of palm oil has also succeeded in making Indonesia the largest producer of palm oil in the world as well as the largest producer of vegetable oil in the world. This condition is advantageous for Indonesia, but on the other hand, this condition also has an impact on trade dynamics that must be faced by Indonesia. Trade dynamics, especially non-price competition, often lead to unfair trade are reflected in the more intensive of black campaigns and trade policies that discriminate against palm oil. This has the potential to have an impact on the performance of the national palm oil industry.

Not only are trade dynamics that are external (global market), the policies issued by the Indonesian government are also the dynamics faced by the national palm oil industry. Therefore, monitoring and analyzing various issues and policies is an important part of Indonesia’s position as the largest palm oil producer.
